Everyone can learn Maths
This is a belief I hold, and is held up by research.
I invite you to visit the website www.youcubed.org where I have drawn a lot of my research and where I have been inspired to change my approach to how I teach maths.
The research presented and discussed by Jo Boaler and many others are aiming to shape and transform Mathematics for now and the future.
There are two ways to teach Maths:
Show students methods and repeat them.
Engage students in rich, open, visual and creative tasks.
My choice is to teach in a deep, meaningful and creative way.
My goal is for students to truly enjoy Maths, to see that they are capable of and to engage in this beautiful and creative subject in a contextual and applicable way.
By using their intuition and thinking, they see how important they are and learn more deeply.
By engaging in the act of choosing they are able to make deeper connections between ideas.
